Good Riddance Junk Removal
Good Riddance Junk Removal is a proud supporter of United Way for Southeastern Michigan
When you use Good Riddance Junk Removal, you can rest assured that the items we collect from your site are put to the best use possible. We auction many of the items we collect and donate the proceeds to United Way for Southeastern Michigan. By auctioning re-useable items, we help reduce the amount of waste going into local landfills, while improving lives and neighborhoods in area communities in partnership with United Way.
United Way's Agenda targets educational preparedness, financial stability and basic needs in an effort to create lasting change across our region.
About United Way for Southeastern Michigan
www.uwsem.org
United Way brings communities together to focus on the most important needs in the community -- building partnerships, forging consensus and leveraging resources to make a measurable difference. If it requires fundraising, going to Congress, or just getting people to work together, that's what United Way does. The organization looks at root causes because it's not enough to feed a hungry family. You have to change the conditions that led to hunger in the first place.
A Fresh Agenda
United Way's Agenda for Change is a new action plan based on substantial community feedback and research focused on:
- Educational preparedness: children are ready to succeed in school and beyond;
- Financial stability: people are financially stable and secure; and
- Basic needs: people are able to meet their needs and move toward financial stability
Working In Your Community Every Day
United Way works every day to improve lives and build stronger communities by providing brighter futures for children and adults across Southeastern Michigan.
United Way produces real,
lasting results through initiatives like:
Individual Development Accounts (IDAs)
To date, 186 IDA participants have used their savings and matching funds provided by United Way on 74 home mortgages, 20 new or expanded businesses and 92 educational purchases. IDA participants have closed on more than $6.4 million in mortgages.
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Partnership
Volunteers and seasonal tax assistants provided by United Way served 1,127 clients in 2007, returning $973,716 in EITC refunds and credits to the community. Additionally, United Way support made it possible to electronically file 5,566 returns -- 67 percent of those prepared at the free sites.
United Way 2-1-1
Connects users to more than 20,000 helpful programs, 24 hours a day, in multiple languages. 2-1-1 also links callers to opportunities to volunteer or donate. In 2007, 2-1-1 handled more than 160,000 calls, and expects to field more than 200,000 this year as more people reach out to give or get help.
Virgil H.Carr School Attendance Initiative
Through the initiative, 346 students (grades K-8) from 12 schools, and their families, are receiving the support necessary to increase poor school attendance rates. More than 140 students improved their attendance records, resulting in a total of 692 more days spent in school by the group, during the first monitored reporting period.
Women's Initiative Early Childhood Literacy Program
More than 200 area families have received literacy training in their homes. As a result, 57 percent of the preschoolers in those families are better able to recognize letters, 61 percent have substantially improved their awareness of printed materials and 43 percent more of them are asking parents to read to them every day.
George Romney Volunteer Center
The center has referred 22,161 individuals to service opportunities across the region during the past year. Volunteers have contributed more than 1,639 hours helping others. The volunteer center promotes 441 service projects in the area.
